Spring 2019 Season

February 4-16, 2019

The Symphony Orchestra of India’s Spring 2019 concerts begin on February 4 in a programme conducted by Martyn Brabbins, in his second appearance with the SOI following his highly-acclaimed concerts in 2016. One of the U.K.’s most well-established conductors, Brabbins is the Music Director of the English National Opera and the Huddersfield Choral Society and Visiting Professor of Conducting at The Royal College of Music. This programme features violinist and Music Director of the SOI Marat Bisengaliev performing Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, alongside Weber’s Overture to Oberon & Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.

On February 9 & 10, Brabbins will lead the SOI in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, often considered the pinnacle of symphonic music. The last movement features the beloved ‘Ode to Joy’, and the concert will feature joint choirs from India and abroad and world-class soloists. The programme will also include Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, a piano concerto movement, performed by pianist Andreas Haefliger, and bringing in a choir and vocal soloists for the climax nearing the finale.

Associate Music Director Zane Dalal will lead the concert on February 16 featuring Zakir Hussain’s Peshkar, a concerto for tabla and orchestra, commissioned by the SOI.  Zakir Hussain will join the SOI in the first performances in India of this concerto since the world premiere in 2015. The programme includes Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture  and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, based on The Arabian Nights, and considered the composer’s most popular work

The SOI will embark on its maiden tour of the UK immediately following the concerts in Mumbai. The programmes that will be performed on February 4 & 16 will form our tour programmes, to be performed in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Guildford, and Edinburgh.
